A few days ago an interesting patent from Apple popped up suggesting cat-like features for the iPhone.
The patent was for features that would “vary a position of a mass within the enclosure” and “further comprises an ejecting member operably associated with the removable component and configured to selectively eject the removable component from the device”.
From the patent:
“In one example, the protective mechanism is configured to alter the device orientation as the device is falling. This may allow a less vulnerable portion of the device to impact the surface at the end of a freefall. For example, the protective mechanism may be activated to rotate the device so that it may impact a surface on its edge, rather than on a screen portion.”
Could we see self righting iPhones in the future? It seems unlikely as this would add both thickness and weight to the iPhone – things which Apple seem try to cut down on as much as they can. However, a little gas canister which spins my iPhone so it drops on a more durable edge wouldn’t be so bad!
I’m not entirely sure how effective this would be – the iPhone is after all made of glass and we should treat it so if we want it to survive the trials of life. Perhaps a deployable parachute would do the trick nicely.
You shouldn’t be dropping your phones anyway!
